The origin of Un-Marketing was fueled by a trip I took to a local art show. There were roughly 100 booths of artists displaying their paintings for the thousands of people to see over the weekend. These people paid a lot of money to have their booths so you can assume they wanted to make a sale or two before the weekend was over. That was the problem. These pieces were not impulse purchases. It takes a lot of time and thought to select a high-end piece of art to display in your home. The artists were only thinking about sales on the spot rather than down the road. People came into their "tent", looked around and left. Artisans made no attempt to find out what they were interested in and offered no opportunity to give their contact information. The stack of business cards and brochures on a table, if someone cared to take one, was the standard fare. They were defining the Un-Marketing term "Push & Pray", which means they were "Pushing" out their marketing (the booth, biz cards, brochures) and praying someone would buy from them. That is a waste of time and money. What they should have done is the "Pull & Stay" technique. A simple request to gather the potential customers’ information by either a contest (giving away a postcard sized print, etc..) or a discount. They could have gathered every interested person’s info and kept in touch with them consistently, so when the time does come to purchase a painting, they would be at the forefront of the buyer’s mind. That's what Un-Marketing is all about, being at the tip of the tongue of someone interested in purchasing your product or service. The best part about it is all of the methods of Un-Marketing either cost very little or are free:
