I just got back from an art exhibit show called
"Art By The Lake". It's one of those shows with
about a million vendors of art's and crafts (ok,
not a million, but I lost count after 46, so I
rounded up :-)

So many paintings, beautiful work, so many lost
customers.... why? Every one of these tents was
letting people ogle at their fine wares, and not
one was gathering people's information, let alone
promoting a website or a contest. A few had
business cards hidden on a table for people to
reach and take if they felt so bold. All it takes
is a sign-up sheet, a person asking would they
like to be kept up-to-date when new pieces are
made etc... to get people's email or snail mail
info. Not one.
 
Art, just like many other purchases are not
usually impulse, it takes time, but if I walk away
from your booth and on to the next I usually
forget about you, or just can't remember your
name...but boy you had some nice stuff, I wish I
could remember so I could buy it now. (I hear some
of you cringing in pain...)
 
Do you see what I'm getting at? How many of you
have a website like one of these artists? Looks
ok, shows your work and then *POOF* the person is
gone. Give them a reason to stay in your loop. You
reading this is an example of staying in my loop.
You could of dropped by WorkYourLife.com and said
"That's nice" or "nice hair" or "great article"
and maybe even bookmarked it, along with your 1532
other bookmarks (again, I'm rounding up) but if
you give ME your email address, and as long as I
don't abuse the privilege, you are now in my loop,
my circle of influence that I control.
 
Same goes for networking events and trade shows
etc... it doesn't matter how many cards you give
out, it's how many you get.
 
Reply to this and let me know how you currently are
keeping people in your loop, and how you are going to
better it.
