Integrity & Morals At Work

"A belief is not merely an idea the mind possesses; it is an idea that possesses the mind."

- Robert Bolton

There is a saying that I have heard far too often in business. "You have to do, what you have to do". Doing what it takes to get the job done. One thing a job, employer or boss cannot take away from you is your integrity. Integrity is the mural into which we weave our morals. No one can take it away from you because it's only something that you can give or compromise. No job is worth compromising those morals. In these times, layoffs happen frequently because a company's bottom line is to make more money. If or when that day comes for you, can you walk out of there saying "They have taken my job, but haven't taken my integrity"? Also, you can go home knowing that one day the people that have compromised their integrity will be out of the company with less than you, as far as integrity and morals are concerned.

People have become accustomed to the habit of throwing decency away for a chance at a promotion, or a big business deal. Integrity was something on which business deals used to be sold. A handshake was better than a signed contract. Now, until seven lawyers look at it, and it's approved by twelve departments, no deal can be done. That's because our society as a whole has allowed us to push aside our morals for the sake of business. No more can we take a person's word that something will be done. We have to "cc" everyone in the company to make sure our own backside is saved just in case someone doesn't hold up their end of the bargain. We have to spend more time assigning, or avoiding, blame for a problem, than we do figuring out a solution.
